Recently, I had reviewing a portfolio by the Korean artist, grymC.

When I look through grymC’s portfolio, what strikes me first is your powerful, intuitive sense of color. I see a thoughtful way in how different hues are placed – always in conversation with each other, often resulting in organic, abstracted shapes.

While there isn’t much overt physical texture on the surface, some pieces almost resemble torn layers of tissue paper. Yet, most of the texture comes alive through the kinesis and energy in your application of pigment.

I find that your choices of size and scale suit both the individual work and the subject matter, and I’m intrigued by the thought of seeing you push these boundaries, working either much smaller or monumentally larger. Your process feels improvisational and instinct-driven, not strictly mapped out beforehand, and that sense of responsiveness brings freshness to the collection.

Among the works, I see “Colors in an Ordinary Day #2” and “Spring, Abstracted #2504a” as your strongest.

“Colors in an Ordinary Day #2” leverages saturated hues – violet, aqua, emerald, crimson – that immediately draw the viewer in. The deployment of a very dark, nearly linear element across the composition gives it depth, and there’s a circular movement of the eye throughout the passages, making the whole feel balanced and complete. There’s a kind of landscape sensibility in the way foreground, midground, and background interplay.

With “Spring, Abstracted #2504a,” what first appears light and delicate is actually loaded with richer colors just beneath the pale surface; layered effects allow those vibrant tones to burn through the white, and there’s a distinct vertical motion like a waterfall drifting through mist. The composition in both is balanced, and nothing feels overworked.

While it is valuable to experiment and explore different approaches, the reality is that promoting and establishing yourself in galleries requires a recognizable, consistent style. I recommend identifying which 1–2 styles are most successful (commercially and in audience recognition) and focusing your output on these.

Once you are established and well-recognized, you can gradually introduce greater variety into your exhibition work. For now, save style explorations for studio exercises rather than your primary commercial offering.

여러 작품 중에서 저는 “Colors in an Ordinary Day #2“와 “Spring, Abstracted #2504a“가 가장 인상 깊었습니다.

“Colors in an Ordinary Day #2″에서는 바이올렛, 아쿠아, 에메랄드, 크림슨 컬러등으로 구성된 채도가 눈을 단번에 사로잡았습니다. 어둡고 거의 선처럼 펼쳐진 요소가 화면 전체에 깊이를 더해 주었고, 보는 이의 눈이 화면을 원형으로 움직이게 하며 균형과 완성도가 잘 느껴졌습니다.

“Spring, Abstracted #2504a”는 처음에는 밝게 보이지만, 겹겹이 쌓인 깊은 색상이 하얀 전경을 뚫고 나오는 느낌이 있습니다. 수직적인 기운과 안개 낀 폭포 같은 분위기가 화면에 구현되어 있다고 생각합니다. 두 작품 모두 지나치게 과하게 다듬어지지 않고, 균형감이 뛰어납니다.

스타일의 일관성 측면에서는, 다양한 실험과 변주도 중요하지만 결국 판매와 대중의 인지도를 높이는 데에는 자신만의 뚜렷한 스타일 1~2개를 꾸준히 보여주는 것이 필수적입니다. 그 스타일로 갤러리와 관객에게 인식되고 난 이후, 상업적 세팅에서 조금 더 폭넓은 스타일을 점차적으로 시도해볼 수 있습니다.

새로운 스타일 시도의 욕구가 있다면 스튜디오 작업이나 드로잉 등으로 충분히 즐기되, 시장에 내놓는 본작들은 대표 스타일을 중심으로 구성해 보시길 권합니다.
